Cops release identities of suspects in Staten Island restaurant shooting

Orlando Douglas, left, and Jimmy SandersPolice are asking the public's assistance in locating two men they suspect fired a hail of bullets outside a restaurant in Staten Island's New Springville community, sending two to the hospital with gunshot wounds.
Orlando Douglas, 25, and Jimmy Sanders, 30, are wanted in the shooting, which took place at T.G.I. Friday's on Nov. 11.
Two friends who stepped outside the eatery to have a smoke were wounded in the attack.

Whoopi Goldberg was introduced at the Hilton Garden Inn by Mayor Bloomberg.Whoopi Goldberg was the keynote speaker at the Staten Island Advance Women of Achievement luncheon at the Hilton Garden Inn.
She rushed from her appearance on her ABC TV show "The View" to appear at the luncheon, where she praised the honorees and past Women of Achievement for their volunteerism. Ms. Goldberg was introduced by her friend Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

District Attorney Daniel Donovan announced an anti-shoplifting campaign at the Staten Island Mall today.Besides sitting on Santa's lap, there's another sure-fire way to get your picture posted this holiday season at the Staten Island Mall: Shoplift.
District Attorney Daniel Donovan today announced an anti-shoplifting campaign featuring the "mug shots" of five repeat offenders convicted of ripping off mall merchants.
From now through mid-January, their nameless faces will pop up every six minutes on the 11 digital advertising boards stationed throughout the New Springville shopping center.

Bryan Garaventa, 18, of Rosebank, arrives at Stapleton Criminal Court this morningTwo Staten Island teenagers accused of pummeling a black Muslim in a racially-charged Election night attack made a brief appearance in Stapleton Criminal Court this morning.
Neither Bryan Garaventa of Rosebank or Ralph Nicoletti of Fort Wadsworth -- both 18 -- said anything during the short hearing, and their case was adjourned until a later date.
The teens have been charged with assault as a hate crime in connection with the Nov. 4 attack on 17-year-old Alie Kamara. Kamara told cops a carload of white teens assaulted him with a bat while shouting "Obama," just as Barack Obama's election as the nation's first black president was becoming official.
State unemployment data to be released

New York unemployment statistics for October are set to be released soon after the U.S. Labor Department announced new claims for jobless benefits climbed to a 16-year high last week.
The latest state numbers are due out Thursday afternoon, a day after HSBC Mortgage Corp. said it was cutting 225 jobs at its Buffalo-area headquarters. That's about 20 percent of the 1,100 employees at HSBC Bank USA's mortgage division.
The financial industry continues to shed jobs in Manhattan and one of the North Country's biggest private employers -- Wyeth Pharmaceuticals -- also announced plans to lay off 118 of the 725 remaining workers at its plant in Rouses Point.
The state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.8 percent in September and August.
Big fare hike on tap for Staten Island express bus riders

Commuters wait for buses at Narrows Road South at Fingerboard Road.Staten Island express bus riders may have to shell out $7.50 per ride, up from $5, if a proposed fare hike goes into effect to help overcome the MTA's massive budget deficit.
The authority that runs the nation's largest public transit system said today that it will have to raise fare revenue by 23 percent next year in order to plug a planned budget gap.

The Advance event will pay tribute to six women who have gone above and beyond in serving Staten Island: Rosemarie Amoia, Eunice Hodge, Beverly Neuhaus, Fran Reali, Maribel Sansone and Ellen Tharp.
